The jail system is basically used in the United States penal system where in jail acts as a correctional institution for the detained persons like inmates, prisoners and convicts who are serving a sentence of less than one year. These people are in the lawful custody of the state and can include people who are accused of crimes but still awaiting trial.
Generally, jails are small penitentiaries that are run by individual counties and cities. In larger communities, they can hold inmates are regular prisons. The whole facility is divided into wings depending on the type of offender. They also have work programs for inmates who demonstrate good behavior. In essence, jails are run or operated by the city or county governments. They house prisoners who are being detained till their trial date or those who are serving sentences of less than one year.

Once sentenced, a prisoner will then be moved to correctional facilities operated by the state government if his sentence is longer than a year. If they’re sentenced to less than a year, jail time could include community service, work release, weekend reporting or electronic monitoring.

Criminals can be housed in a facility that covers maximum security where the offenders are younger, having unknown histories and propensities for violence. If an inmate shows good behavior, they can be set up in a step down program wherein they can be moved to a correction facility of lesser security. In these kinds of jails, prisoners detained here are usually older and are serving longer periods of sentences. At the onset though, many jails operate their booking and receiving units at high levels of correctional security to ensure safety of the prisoners as well as society.
The jail system is managed in intermittent surveillance, remote surveillance or direct supervision. Direct supervision is where staff constantly interacts with inmates to control their behavior.
